Awareness
For Diabetes Advocacy, awareness is key. When people begin to understand
Type One Diabetes then they will be more likely to stand up and help
fund a cure. That is our belief and it is the platform from which we
work. This page covers some of the efforts made by ourselves and others
in the name of awareness.
Raising Awareness
Upcoming Walks:
Awareness is also raised by various walks hosted throughout the world in
aid of diabetes. Each year both the
Diabetes Hope Foundation,
Canadian Diabetes Association and the
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation have walks for a cure in
cities throughout the nation. All organization also promote mini-walks
such as those organized by and carried out by schools. We encourage
everyone to get out and "Walk for a Cure". Send out letters explaining
what Type 1 Diabetes is, how it effects your family, and why you need
their support. The results and more importantly the knowledge that you
are helping to fund a cure will empower you and your family.
Not sure if there is a walk near you? Check the above websites for a
walk in your area.

Team Diabetes
Marathons
The Canadian Diabetes
Association has created "Team Diabetes" as a way to fundraise, get fit
and have fun. Participants are asked to raise a minimum amount of
money and then participate in a marathon.
Awareness Marathon
Please
help Tricia and her "Fire and Ice Marathon" in Rekjavik in August of
2008. See her request below. Provide her with pictures and stories
so that you can "run with her" in Rekjavik. To donate to her fundraising
effort go to

Walking, I like.
Running, I can do without.
So why am I training for a marathon in August 2008?
Two years ago, I was looking forward to the birth of my daughter,
Lauren.
When I was 6 months pregnant, I was told that I had Type 1 diabetes.
Next August, I will run in the Rekjavik “Fire and Ice” Marathon to raise
funds for the Canadian Diabetes Association. Why am I doing this? I am
running for all of those people, big and little, who are diagnosed with
this disease. This disease takes so much time, thought, and effort to
manage well, and sometimes it still frustrates our best attempts at
management. It breaks my heart to think of a child who has to deal with
this disease. Though I would love to see a cure, I am running to help us
manage this disease as best we can, now and in the future.
I would like to carry the names, faces, and experiences of Canadians
with diabetes as I run. More than 2 million of us have diabetes.
I am looking for photos, drawings, and writing about your life with
diabetes. Help show others the faces of those I am running for! I will
place each photo, drawing, and statement onto a scarf that will come
with me during the marathon. My contact information is below.
Please forward this to Canadians who have been affected by diabetes.
Take care,
Tricia Edgar

Quilt for Life
www.childrenwithdiabetes.com has created a "Quilt for Life" It is a
giant quilt made up of many smaller quilts. Each quilt represents a
person who is living or lived with Type 1 Diabetes. The "Quilt" is
displayed at various venues throughout the US to help raise awareness.
We encourage everyone to have their loved one remembered in this way.

Quilt
#25 for Liam diagnosed at 2.5yr
The Quilt for Life, organized by Jeff Hitchcock (of
the ChildrenWithDiabetes organization will be displayed August 4-5 in
Washington DC. The location of the quilt is simply perfect because
it's right in front of the US Capitol (just slightly West of the pool).
That means that it's close to Senate buildings to the North and the
House buildings to the South. If you have already submitted a quilt
within the last 5 or 6 years, that's great, and THANK YOU! If not,
please click on this link to learn more about what you might want and
probably need to do:
http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/activities/quilt/quiltsubmission.htm
People will be working to attract members of Congress
to view the quilt. You are encouraged to make a quilt (if you
haven't already) and also to try your hardest to see this incredibly
emotional display of what will almost definitely be more than 600
quilts. Check out this link to see the QFL display back in 2006:
http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/activities/quilt/dc2006/ .
For those that handle advocacy related issues for
whatever charity you volunteer, please consider spreading this great
cause around to all your chapters. There is still time to try to get
the info into local newsletters. You can
contact us or contact Jeff Hitchcock (
jeffh AT childrenwithdiabetes.com) or Laura Billetdeaux (laura.billetdeaux
AT childrenwithdiabetes.com ) for more info as well.
www.childrenwithdiabetes.com also offers a program which allows
you to create calendars made up of pictures of these quilts which
can be shared with family and friends or sent to politicians to help
raise awareness.
Faces
of Diabetes
This is an awareness strategy that we at DiabetesAdvocacy used in
November of 2005. We asked people living with diabetes to send us their
stories and pictures. We then sent copies to many of our MPs. If you
would like to be involved in next year's campaign or would like your
stories posted on our
Faces of
Diabetes page, please
contact us with your story.
